The Organising Committee of the Annual Greencastle 5 Mile Road Run extends a warm welcome to all participants, their families and their supporters, to our many volunteers and to our sponsors. We will proudly celebrate our 31st Annual Greencastle 5mile Run on 26th December 2016. It is a long time since our first race back in 1986. Back then we had approximately eighty entrants for our first ever outing. Over the years the event became ever more popular. Being staged during the Christmas Break has the added attraction of allowing entrants to psychologically and physically recover from some of the excesses of the Christmas Fayre.
Last year many travelled long distances to be part of the record of almost thirteen hundred entries. As in previous years the course hosted walkers, joggers, casual once-a-year runners and serious competitors, some striving for personal bests and some being that bit more ambitious in the hope of achieving the prestigious reward of getting a prized placement. During this year on the 31st Annual Road Race, we wish you good luck, and may you enjoy this event.
This Annual race is also a very significant event in the local athletic calendar. Each year a host of locals and many members of the wider competitive running fraternity volunteer to slot into the many behind-the-scene and off-the-course stewarding roles. To you we owe an immeasurable debt of gratitude. Your continued effort and support sustains this race. A big thank-you is due to the Omagh Branch of The Order of Malta for taking charge of First-aid on the course. This Greencastle Road Race has taken on a life and a meaning of its own, a life which is probably born out of an individual and collective desire to do what we can for the greater good of all. Over the years this ‘life and meaning’ has witnessed tens of thousands of pounds being donated to various charities.
