Major Project
What is IrishSlang.info?
Irish Slang.info is a web site dedicated to Slang. Unlike web sites like the Urban Dictionary, IrishSlang.info will be dedicated to Slang Terminology used throughout Northern Ireland. For example, in county Tyrone, people great each other by saying phrases like “how do” or a more unusual way of saying it is “well horse” which is partly where the branding idea of the horse has come from, People from here in Belfast just simply say “bout ye!”
E-Commerce
The web site is going to be e-commerce web site as various merchandise with the web sites logo will be available to buy, merchandise such as t-shirts, mugs, key rings etc. But the main focus of this will be ring tones. You will be able to listen to a phrase you like, and buy it for your mobile phone. For security reasons and ease of use, PayPal will be used for this.
User Interaction
The majority of interaction will be based around a web forum and user submitted audio clips. Users will be able to submit their own phrases, and submit their very own recordings of them saying a slang phrase from their hometown. Hence the tag line, “straight from the horse’s mouth”.
Moderation
However, people could very simply upload anything they feel like, this could potentially turn the web site into a “slagging” match, or worse it could end up being a complete political debate. This is why heavy moderation methods are going to be put in place, any phrase or voice recording submitted will be checked over to ensure it is fully legit before being made public on the web site.
Legal
There are certain legal issues over ownership of the slang phrases being submitted. In particular the voice recordings being sold via the web site. To help limit issues, users will have to agree to a terms of use before signing up on the web site, and in this it will state specifically that any phrases submitted to IrishSlang.info will then become ownership of the web sites owner, and that the phrases can be re-used as required without dispute.
Development
The web site logo has been developed using Adobe Illustrator CS4, and the web site template has been designed using Adobe Photoshop CS4.
The current web server being used is currently configured with PHP 5.0 and MySQL 4.1 standard edition.
The content management system to control the entire web sites content and interactions will be Joomla.
Target Audience
Primarily 13-25 year olds. I feel strongly that people over 25 years of age may not particularly care what slang terms are going to be used around the country, but at the same time they might, it all depends on the person’s personality. But right now I strongly feel that my target audience will be 13-25 year olds.
Promotion & SEO
SEO will be carried out using Meta tags, and appropriate keywords located throughout the web site, however SEO is an ongoing thing and will take a long time to get to a high standard.
Promotion via celebrity input of a video clip of them welcoming the users to the web site. So far I have Jake O Kane, Colin Murphy, Keith Farnan, Keith Law, Dave Twentyman and Peter Canavan
Future Developments
Due to time constraints put on me by university deadlines, I would have liked to have developed an entire section for the Republic Of Ireland, but if the web site does well, I would intend on doing this in the future.
Also, I would like to perhaps bring in a professional voice over man or woman to speak the slang phrases for resale, if it would prove to be cost effective.
